Scaling YouTube Campaigns in Display & Video 360: Best Practices 2026 (Part 1)

In 2026, launching YouTube in Display & Video 360 (DV360) has become a priority solution for managing large-scale video campaigns. The integration of enterprise-grade tools and modern AI solutions allows marketers to control frequency, optimize budgets, and build significantly deeper brand awareness than traditional ad platforms offer.

In this article, CoobX experts have compiled this year’s key Best Practices to help you get the absolute most out of your video advertising.

Effective scaling of YouTube campaigns is determined not by the volume of impressions purchased, but by a brand's ability to align formats, inventory, frequency, and optimization logic across the entire engagement funnel. Access to premium inventory and AI optimization alone does not guarantee media efficiency — key differentiators between campaigns are established well before launch.

The Role of YouTube in the Media Mix and DV360 Ecosystem

Analyzing the modern digital marketing landscape, CoobX experts conducted a detailed study of DV360 advertising accounts they managed during the first half of 2026.

The results demonstrate the clear dominance of video formats in Greece, accounting for the lion’s share of total ad spend at 88.8%. Standard Display (banners, static images, etc.) follows in second place with 9.1%, while Audio formats hold a smaller share at 2.1% but continue to develop.

Looking at spend distribution across ad exchanges, YouTube & partners inventory leads the market with 78.4%, followed by Google Ad Manager at 13.9%. All other platforms combined (Equativ, Spotify Ad Exchange, Magnite DV+, BidSwitch, etc.) account for remaining 7.7% of ad budgets.

Device-level spend distribution is equally notable: Connected TV claims more than half of total expenditure at 54.3%, showcasing impressive growth momentum. Smart Phone holds 35.2%, while Desktop accounts for 6.8%. This makes ad creatives and strategies tailored specifically for large screens critical when building full-funnel YouTube campaigns in 2026.

But why are advertisers betting so heavily on YouTube?

The answer lies in the platform’s scale and its impact on the User Journey. With over 2 billion monthly active users and more than 500 hours of video uploaded every minute, YouTube has become a key touchpoint for brands looking to reach and engage audiences throughout the customer journey.

The modern User Journey has long ceased to be linear: today, 8 out of 10 online purchases involve several complex interaction stages. More than 78% of the platform’s users tend to trust content from creators and bloggers regarding the products and services they plan to buy.

According to Google/Ipsos research, YouTube delivers an average of 2.3 times higher long-term ROAS than advertising on traditional social networks.

Audience behavior analysis highlights four key interaction formats:

  • Streaming: Connected TV has shown the fastest growth over the past five years, strengthening its role as a powerful reach and full-funnel channel within the YouTube media mix.
  • Searching: Users turn to YouTube twice as often as social media to search for product information.
  • Scrolling: YouTube Shorts reaches a unique audience (45% of Shorts viewers do not use TikTok, and 65% do not watch Instagram Reels).
  • Shopping: ⅘ of users claim that the platform helps them make purchasing decisions.

Another tangible advantage of the platform is the ability to cover all stages of the marketing funnel thanks to specialized Line Item types in DV360. They allow marketers to configure format, audiences, budgets, and impression frequency:

  • Top of the funnel (Video Reach): increases reach by up to 54% while simultaneously reducing CPM by up to 42%.
  • Middle of the funnel (Video View): delivers 40% more views and a 40% higher consideration lift.
  • Bottom of the funnel (Demand Gen): generates demand and increases the number of conversions.

However, the greatest efficiency of DV360 lies precisely in the Full-Funnel approach and the right combination of formats. Combining VRC and VVC campaigns boosts sales efficiency by 23%, while integrating Search + Video Ads provides a lift of up to:

  • +45% in Ad Recall;
  • +43% in Purchase Intent;
  • +180% in brand Message Retention.

Implementing such a large-scale strategy requires enterprise-grade tools, and this is precisely where Display & Video 360 demonstrates its key technological advantages over standard Google Ads:

  • Cross-channel Frequency Cap: unified impression frequency control (YouTube, Display, CTV, Audio) that prevents audience fatigue and saves budget.
  • Instant Reserve self-service: direct access to premium inventory (YouTube Select, Masthead, First Position, Pause Ads, 30s Non-Skippable on CTV).
  • Floodlight + CM360 integration: deduplicated conversions and advanced reporting (Unique/Exclusive/Duplicate Reach, Co-Viewed) that clearly reveals the channels with the most effective reach.

Now, let’s focus in more detail on the variety of ad formats YouTube offers in Display & Video 360, as they are what enable the necessary level of communication with the platform’s audience.

YouTube Ad Formats in DV360 and Their Application

Selecting the right ad format is the foundation of media campaign profitability. In DV360, YouTube formats vary by user interaction style, duration, payment model, and role within the marketing funnel.

Skippable In-Stream Ads

Classic video ads that play before, during, or after the main video and can be skipped after 5 seconds.

  • Technical Specifications: A TrueView view is counted at the 30-second mark (or upon complete watch for shorter videos). Recommended video duration is up to 3 minutes. The format supports a Companion banner (300×60 px, JPG/GIF/PNG, up to 150 KB) and 3rd-party tracking pixels. The key metric here is View Rate.
  • Application: Detailed brand introduction. Works across all funnel stages (from Awareness to Conversions).
  • Payment Models: CPV or CPM.

Bumper Ads

Short, unskippable video ads up to 6 seconds long.

  • Technical Specifications: Support Companion banners (300×60 px, up to 150 KB) and tracking pixels. Do not generate TrueView views (only YouTube public views), meaning remarketing lists cannot be compiled from them. Adding this format to a Video Reach Campaign (VRC mix) provides up to +44% incremental reach.
  • Application: Rapid message delivery to build contact frequency. Bumper Ads work most effectively when paired with longer formats to reinforce product awareness (reinforcement).
  • Payment Model: CPM.

Non-Skippable In-Stream Ads

Unskippable video ads lasting 7–30 seconds (or up to 60 seconds when purchasing CTV impressions via Instant Deals).

  • Technical Specifications: Guarantee 100% message delivery. Support Companion banners (300×60 px, up to 150 KB). Keep in mind that Non-Skippable In-Stream Ads do not generate TrueView views (making remarketing based on them unavailable). Videos 16–30 seconds long are primarily served on Connected TV.
  • Application: New product launches and rebranding, where every single second of the message is critical.
  • Payment Model: CPM.

In-Feed Video Ads

A native format displayed in YouTube search results, on the mobile homepage, or alongside related videos. It consists of a thumbnail image, text, and video.

  • Technical Specifications: Headline limit is up to 100 characters; Description limit is up to 35 characters. There are no video duration restrictions. An interaction is counted upon a thumbnail click or after 10 seconds of autoplay.
  • Application: Discovery campaigns and customer engagement at the Consideration stage, when the user actively selects your video from other content.
  • Payment Models: CPV or CPM.

Shorts Ads

Vertical ads served within the YouTube Shorts feed that can be skipped immediately with a swipe.

  • Technical Specifications: A TrueView view is counted after 10 seconds of autoplay or upon complete video view (for clips under 6 seconds). Videos must be strictly vertical. An Impression is registered at the start, while Engagement is recorded after 5 seconds of viewing or upon clicking the CTA button. The minimum video duration is 10 seconds (for Video Views) or 5 seconds (for VRC/Deals). Videos longer than 60 seconds loop automatically.
  • Application: Native audience reach during passive content consumption.
  • Payment Models: CPV or CPM.

Pause Ads (ексклюзивно для Instant Deals)

A static banner on CTV that appears when the viewer pauses a video.

  • Technical Specifications: A semi-transparent overlay banner sized with width and height between 1080 and 1350 px (PNG/JPG, up to 2 MB, aspect ratios from 4:5.5 to 4:4). It appears 10 seconds after pause is pressed. Viewers can manually dismiss the banner or resume playback. Integrating a QR code is recommended for instant navigation.
  • Application: Premium, non-intrusive branding on large screens without causing viewer annoyance.
  • Payment Model: CPM.

YouTube Audio Ads

A format designed for users listening to music or podcasts in the background.

  • Technical Specifications: An audio ad up to 15 seconds (unskippable) or 16 to 30 seconds (skippable). Although it is an audio format, uploading a video file to the platform is still required. The key metric here is audibility. Does not generate TrueView views.
  • Application: An additional touchpoint in the media mix for reaching audiences during listening-only moments.
  • Payment Model: CPM.

Masthead Ads (Instant Deals Exclusive)

Premium placement at the top of the YouTube and Google TV homepage.

  • Technical Specifications: Video of 10 seconds or longer (with public or unlisted status). Headline limit is up to 80 characters; Description limit is up to 200 characters. Display depends on the device:
    • Desktop: Muted autoplay for up to 30 seconds in 16:9 aspect ratio.
    • Mobile: Full autoplay with a customized CTA button.
    • Connected TV: Full muted autoplay without a CTA button.
  • Application: Maximum audience reach within an ultra-short timeframe, ideal for large-scale brand announcements and event launches.
  • Payment Model: CPM.

Understanding the specifics of these formats is the foundation of competent enterprise media planning. Remember that each tool is designed for a unique user behavior pattern, so making a mistake in format selection can completely negate the effectiveness of even the strongest creative.

Campaign Launch Methods in DV360: Comparing Instant Deals and Regular Line Items

Enterprise-grade media planning in Display & Video 360 requires a clear separation of inventory procurement into two directions:

  • Instant Deals (Premium): Direct access to premium inventory (YouTube Select, Masthead, Pause Ads) at a fixed price.
  • Regular Line Items (Auction): Purchasing on the open auction. Provides full control over targeting, real-time budgets, and AI-driven bidding. Essential for product optimization: VRC, Target Frequency, VVC, and Demand Gen.

Let’s look at how to properly connect and configure Instant Deals — a tool for purchasing premium inventory in DV360. Within Instant Deals, two models are available:

  • Guaranteed: A guaranteed volume of impressions at a fixed CPM with full inventory delivery. Suitable for large brand image campaigns, launches, and peak seasons. In Greece, available In-Stream formats include Bumper, Skippable, and Non-Skippable lasting 15 and 30 seconds.
  • Non-Guaranteed: Premium inventory at a fixed price with flexible settings for reach, targeting, and budgets. Currently, this model is available in beta status.

Connecting and configuring Instant Deals takes place directly within DV360 and consists of five steps:

  • Activation of YouTube Instant Deals through a CoobX manager.
  • Deal configuration in the Marketplace section: selecting the format, budget, dates, and targeting.
  • Reviewing the CPM and impression volume forecast, and accepting the Terms & Conditions.
  • Automatic creation of the Insertion Order and Line Item within the selected campaign.
  • Media campaign launch.

To clearly determine which inventory purchasing method will deliver maximum ROI for your business, CoobX experts recommend using the following selection matrix:

  • Guaranteed Instant Deals: Best suited when you need to deploy a large media budget and gain access to premium YouTube Select inventory.
  • Non-Guaranteed Instant Deals: A hybrid format for when you require premium inventory but retaining flexible targeting and frequency optimization is critical.
  • Regular Line Items: The classic auction-based solution featuring AI-driven bid/targeting optimization and algorithmic setups (Efficient Reach, Video Views, Target Frequency, Ad Sequence, Demand Gen).
  • Combined Approach: Guaranteed deals establish a stable awareness base, while Regular Line Items act as a performance layer to drive conversions.

After choosing between Instant Deals and Regular Line Items, we move to the next level of planning: building the right architecture for YouTube Line Items in DV360 aligned with your media campaign goals.

YouTube Line Item Architecture in DV360: Defining Core Goals and Purchasing Methods

The full functionality and flexibility of Display & Video 360 are best revealed at the campaign structuring level. Unlike basic tools, launching video advertising here starts with selecting the Line Item type, which establishes the inventory purchasing logic and rules for the algorithms: explicitly fixing the inventory type, target metric, and bid optimization model through which AI will locate your audience.

When creating a new Line Item (LI), you will have two main paths available:

  • YouTube & Partners Video: The core foundation for all video formats across YouTube Ads and the Google Video Partners network.
  • YouTube & Partners Audio: A dedicated tool for audio ads on YouTube Music. It supports unskippable audio (up to 15 seconds) and skippable audio (16–30 seconds).

From here, the media campaign architecture splits into two primary goals:

  • Subtypes for Brand Awareness & Reach Goal (Target CPM Model)

Designed to build the upper funnel. Four main Line Item subtypes are available:

Efficient Reach: Maximizes unique reach for the allocated budget. AI automatically mixes and optimizes formats including Skippable In-Stream, Bumper, Shorts (multi-format), and In-Feed.

  • Parameters: Minimum video duration is 5 seconds, and the key metric is Cost per Unique Impression Reach.
  • CoobX Pro Tip: Upload the following creative split into a single LI: one horizontal video of 10–60 seconds (for Skippable/In-Feed), one horizontal bumper of 6 seconds, and one vertical video of 5 seconds (for Shorts).
  • Important: Do not disable formats or modify the format mix during the flight — algorithms optimize them automatically. Keep in mind that manual creative rotation cannot be controlled here.

Non-Skippable Reach: Guarantees 100% message viewability. Primary use cases include new product launches and rebranding campaigns.

  • Parameters: Video duration ranges from 5 to 30 seconds (durations up to 6 seconds are recognized as Bumpers, while 7–30 seconds are categorized as Non-Skippable). Note that you can mix videos of different lengths within a single LI.
  • Important: Videos running 16–30 seconds are served primarily on Connected TV (and consequently carry a higher CPM). They generate public views but do not yield TrueView metrics, making remarketing based on them impossible.

Target Frequency: Builds brand recall through repeated impressions.

  • Parameters: Targeted repeat contact frequency ranges from 2 to 7 impressions per week, or 4 to 12 impressions per month. Formats include Bumper, Skippable, and Non-Skippable (+ In-Feed and Shorts in multi-format). AI automatically caps frequency to prevent audience overexposure.
  • Important: Manual frequency capping and positive content targeting (videos, channels, keywords) are unavailable here. A single LI can contain only one ad group. Audience targeting is evaluated solely for the initial impression within the interval — afterward, the algorithm continues driving frequency even if the user profile shifts. This limitation does not apply to age, gender, or geography, and the minimum flight length is 7 days.

Ad Sequence: Sequential storytelling delivered as a series of video ads shown in a strictly defined order.

  • Parameters: Each step in the sequence is a separate ad group containing a single video. The user’s progression to the next step depends on their interaction: an impression, a view, or a skip. The platform offers pre-built templates including: Introduce & Reinforce, Prompt & Inspire, Attract & Direct, and Engage & Differentiate.
  • Important: Frequency is capped at one sequence per 7 or 30 days. Targeting is set exclusively at the LI level, and Product feeds are unavailable. Keep in mind that pausing a single ad group halts the entire sequence chain.

  • Subtype for Product & Brand Consideration Goal: Video Views (Target CPV Model)

Operates at the product consideration stage and is focused on maximizing TrueView views at the lowest cost. Uses Skippable In-Stream, Shorts, and In-Feed formats.

  • View Counting Rules:
    • Skippable: 30 seconds of playback, full video completion if shorter than 30 seconds, or an ad interaction, whichever comes first.
    • In-Feed: 10 seconds of autoplay or a thumbnail click.
    • Shorts: 10 seconds of playback (or full video length if the clip is shorter).
  • CoobX Pro Tip: Use multi-format ads to prevent internal competition between similar ad groups. For analytics, always apply a breakdown by the YouTube Ad Format dimension, as viewability and VTR metrics are blended by default.

Transitioning from VAC to Demand Gen

In 2026, an important shift occurred regarding bottom-funnel strategies and conversion driving: YouTube Video Action Campaigns (VAC) transformed into Demand Gen Line Items.

The upgraded Demand Gen toolkit significantly expands upon VAC capabilities:

  • Adds new placements: Discover feed, Gmail, and the Google Display Network.
  • Supports static image assets: Enables image ads alongside video assets.
  • Leverages AI-driven algorithms: Powered by conversion optimization models to drive leads.

Today, we have laid a solid theoretical foundation for working with YouTube video advertising in Display & Video 360: we mapped out the media landscape, analyzed the available YouTube ad formats, and explored the deal types inside DV360 along with Line Item setup methodologies.

However, this is only part of the equation. In the upcoming sections of this guide, we will cover interactive formats, Partnership Ads, product feeds, CTV QR codes, cross-channel remarketing, YouTube campaign performance measurement, the ABCD Framework for creating high-impact video creative, and a real-world success story featuring Lay’s YouTube campaign launch in DV360.
